Tableau tips and limitations

When using Tableau with AtScale, there are a few things you can do in Tableau and/or AtScale to improve the experience. Additionally, there are some limitations when using AtScale with Tableau.

Tips

Cloud functionalities

If you need to use functionalities that are not present in Tableau Cloud, you can create them in Tableau Desktop and publish the workbook.

LOD expressions

For details, see Examples for LOD expressions.

Using the Simba driver

When using the Simba Hive ODBC driver, if the project or cube name (or both) is long you might experience connectivity issues when using Tableau. This can be solved by changing the default configuration of the driver. First, you should do the following in AtScale:

  1. Follow the procedure in Changing Engine Settings to access the settings screen.
  2. Choose Show Custom Settings, enter tableau.odbcConnectStringExtra.manualExtras, and enter the following value: UseNativeQuery=1
  3. Save the changes.

You should also access Advanced Options in the Simba Hive ODBC driver configuration tool, and select the Use Native Query option. For details, see Configuring Advanced Options.

Limitations

No results for Full Data

Choosing View Data > Full Data shows no results or an error. This feature is not supported. (ATSCALE-T243)

Drill down on hierarchies in Tableau Cloud

Drill down on hierarchies created in AtScale works in Tableau Cloud. Consider that there is no option to remove attributes from a hierarchy defined in AtScale. However, it is possible to create a new hierarchy from other attributes (secondary), and then to remove them from the newly created hierarchy. (ATSCALE-T246)

Concatenation with Parameter Actions

Using concatenation with Parameter Actions does not work. (ATSCALE-T525)
