Adding Perspectives

Use the Add Perspective dialog to create a perspective, or virtual view, of an AtScale cube.

Before you begin

  • Ensure that you have either the right permission or authority. To add a perspective to a cube, you must have the Update permission on the cube, be an administrator for your AtScale organization, or be a super user.
  • Open the cube that you want to add a perspective to.

About this task

It is recommended that you add perspectives to a cube only after the cube is fully modeled and tested. Although you can add a perspective to an unfinished cube and can change a cube even after one or more perspectives are added to it, changes to a cube might require you to edit the cube's perspectives to hide new items that are visible by default.

The AtScale engine imposes no limit on the number of perspectives that you can add to a cube. Perspectives contain no data themselves, but are simply virtual views of the data.

Procedure

  1. Open the Perspectives panel by clicking the "binoculars" icon on the toolbar.
  2. From the right-hand menu, choose Add Perspective.
  3. Name the perspective.
  4. Use the Dimensions, Measures, and Calculated Measures tabs to select the objects you want hidden or visible by toggling the "eye" icon next to the object. By default, all items are visible. In the Dimensions section, hiding a level in a hierarchy hides all levels below it, as well as their secondary attributes. Click the "eye" icon next to the name of a hierarchy to hide the entire hierarchy.
  5. Click Save when you are done. The perspective appears in the Perspectives panel.

What to do next

  1. View the visible items in the Preview pane to verify that the perspective will appear as you want it to appear in client BI applications. Open this pane by clicking the "eye" icon in the toolbar on the Cube Designer canvas. In the drop-down menu, select the perspective and view the objects listed. If you decide that you need to modify the perspective, click the menu icon next to the perspective's name in the Perspectives panel.

  2. Grant runtime permissions on the perspective. These permissions are similar to the runtime permissions for cubes, in that they determine which users can query the perspective from client BI applications, such as Microsoft Excel and Tableau Desktop.

As the creator of a perspective, you are granted the runtime permissions by default. All other users and groups in your AtScale organization are also given runtime permissions on a perspective by default.

  3. Publish the perspective. The perspective is not available for querying until the project in which it is located is published.
